Cwm Taf Health Board was established on 1 October 2009 and consists of two District General Hospitals: Prince Charles Hospital and the Royal Glamorgan Hospital. They are responsible for the provision of health care services to over 325,000 people principally covering the Merthyr Tydfil and Rhondda Cynon Taf Local Authority areas.
Prince Charles Hospital is based in Merthyr Tydfil. To the north of the hospital lies the beautiful Brecon Beacons National Park whilst to the south-west is the Gower Peninsula with its outstanding coastline. The capital city of Wales, Cardiff, is only 25 miles away along the dual carriageway (A470) south to north Wales trunk road.
The Royal Glamorgan Hospital is based in Llantrisant, Rhondda Cynon Taff. It is located in a semi-rural area, just 3 miles from the M4 and only 13 miles from the city of Cardiff. The hospital is within easy access to Bristol, Bridgend, Swansea and the whole of south Wales. The hospital is cushioned by areas of outstanding beauty: the Glamorgan Heritage Coast, the Gower, Rhondda Heritage Park and the Brecon Beacons National Park are all within short driving distance.

Consists of an Education Centre which includes an Education & Training Manager and a team of staff that are responsible for both undergraduate and postgraduate education.
Royal Glamorgan Hospital Consists of two separate departments. They include a Postgraduate Manager and a team of staff supporting Postgraduate Education and an Undergraduate Manager and a team of staff supporting Undergraduate Education. You will find friendly and approachable staff in both Centres who will provide support for you throughout your time with us. The support varies from placements, timetables, information about your assessment and appraisal requirements and lots more.
We organise an induction at the start of your rotation to welcome you to our Health Board. We provide regular teaching programmes for all doctors in training posts and we also provide you with lots of opportunities to give us feedback on all aspects of your training and working life.
There are two libraries within Cwm Taf LHB, located at Prince Charles Hospital and the Royal Glamorgan Hospital. The library services contribute to health services by facilitating access to the knowledge base and are local gateways to high quality information. The services provided include literature searching, training in information retrieval skills and inter-library loans. Items not held in the libraries can usually be obtained through various document supply services. The libraries have a comprehensive muti-disciplinary collection of books, reports and journals; computers and printing/copying facilities plus a range of on-line multimedia resources. The Health of Wales Information Service (HOWIS) provides access to the main medical databases and over 200 full-text journals are available.
As well as the 15 Oxford Textbooks on HOWIS, the local library service also offers electronic access to an additional 43 electronic textbooks.
Very friendly and helpful library staff are available to offer help and guidance to access information and support training and practice development.
There is a wide menu choice to suit all tastes, and is subsidised for staff members. The staff restaurant in Prince Charles Hospital is open every day of the week for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The Royal Glamorgan Hospital canteen is a 24 hour facility that offers hot breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks throughout the day.
The doctors' mess in Prince Charles Hospital is located on the first floor near the Education Centre. It consists of a widescreen TV with full Sky package including Movies, Sports etc. There are two computers with internet access, a microwave and fridge. The Mess in the Royal Glamorgan Hospital is near the main stairs on the upper floor, is a very large doctors mess with plenty of seating, a snooker table, fridge, microwave and a large colour television with Freeview.
Housing and schools - Merthyr Tydfil has five Secondary Schools and a college of further education which is a subsidiary of the University of Glamorgan. There is ample housing available - to buy or let.
Shopping - Merthyr Tydfil has excellent shopping facilities with the recent arrival of Cyfarthfa Retail Park which is 5 minutes from Prince Charles Hospital. There are many amenities in and around the town including a brand new leisure centre, cinema, restaurants and pubs. There are many attractions in and around Merthyr including the Brecon Mountain Railway, Cyfarthfa Castle, Brecon Beacons National Park, The Taff Trail and many more.
Housing and schools - Rhondda Cynon Taf have 4 Nursery/Early Years Facilities, 117 primary schools, 19 Secondary Schools and 4 Special Schools. There is a wide variety of housing available in our area ranging from new build estates, rural property to character cottages.
Shopping - Just a short walk away from the Royal Glamorgan Hospital, is the village of Talbot Green which holds excellent amenities such as banks, a post office, leisure centre, 24 hour Tesco Extra, restaurants, pubs and excellent shopping facilities including Comet, Game, Cotswold Outlook, New Look, Next, Outfit and M & S.
By Rail: The nearest main line station is Merthyr Tydfil, which is only a 5 minute walk to the bus station or a 10 minute taxi journey to the Hospital, and has regular service connections to Cardiff.
By Bus: From outlying areas you are advised to travel to the Merythr Tydfil bus station and then take the number 27 bus which travels to the Hospital.
By Road: Merthyr Tydfil is situated north of Cardiff on the A470 and A465 making it easily accessible via the UK road network.
The Royal Glamorgan Hospital is situated in a semi-rural area, just 3 miles from the M4 and only 13 miles from the city of Cardiff on the A4119 (Junction 34 of the M4), between the traffic lights at Talbot Green and the roundabout leading to Tonyrefail. Buses regularly enter the hospital grounds. The nearest rail station is situated in Pontyclun, which is a short journey by bus/taxi.
Prince Charles Hospital has excellent parking facilities available for staff and patients and it is free. The Royal Glamorgan Hospital has excellent parking facilities available for staff. There is 24 hour security and assistance throughout the day.
There have been significant improvements and developments both clinical and non clinical over the last year and we would like to make reference to a few:
The residences are situated within the grounds of Prince Charles Hospital. The complex accommodates 96 people in shared accommodation and there are 17 flats available for married people. All the above have private bedrooms and share the kitchen, lounge, toilet and bathroom. All utility bills are included. Cleaning of communal areas is also included in the price.
Ansari Court in the Royal Glamorgan Hospital offers modern, safe, energy efficient accommodation with the option of single or shared facilities in single rooms, study bedrooms, self-contained flats and three-bedroomed houses. The on-site office with fully dedicated personnel provides a base for routine enquiries and repair reporting. Qualified personnel are on call for emergencies 24 hours a day. The complex accommodates 156 people, is modern, centrally heated and double glazed. It is situated adjacent to, but separate from the hospital. The development also provides facilities for créche, laundry, permit controlled car park, cycle racks, site office and also landscaped gardens. Both sites offer privately run créche facilities.
On the day the junior doctors start Prince Charles Hospital they receive passwords which allows them to access the main Microsoft office applications, the Health board's intranet site and HOWIS. They are also given passwords for Avalon and PACS. Each junior doctor has their own Health board email and can access the internet. Two members of the IT team then come to the Junior Medical Staff Induction and explain the systems etc to the juniors. The Education & Training Centre has now purchased e-learning for the Foundation Skills so each of the 33 Foundation doctors has their own passwords. The Healthboard provides:
We have excellent teaching facilities in the Postgraduate Centre RGH including five Seminar Rooms and a Lecture Theatre all equipped with smart boards, computers and multi-media projectors, together with a dedicated I.T. Support Officer. The Postgraduate Library's 24hr Electronic Study Room enables access to 24 hours per day, 7 days a week, to a wide range of electronic resources. All of the library's PC's have access to Microsoft Office and internet access is available if required.
